Quick tip ‘Attention to detail’

Attention to detail in the creative industry is vital, but in the fast pace lives of today we are continually challenged to meet deadlines, be economical, and stay competitive. Below is a 5 step list to assist with publishing any form of work.

  1. Print it out! – Have someone other than yourself read through your work for spelling and punctuation
  2. Test – Confirm date’s, phone number’s, email’s, website’s/URLs and any contact information.
  3. Consistency – Make sure there is a consistency between all media. (ie. check  printed document against website) Conflicting information can be a turn off
  4. Harmony – Have visual consistency throughout all your work for a particular project. (ie. have logos and themes consistent throughout an entire project)
  5. Publishing – Have patience and don’t rush into publishing any form of work from an annual report to a post on a blog. Errors or changes tend to rise to the surface closer to deadline.

We all have a ‘to do list’ in one form or another. Be it a list scribbled on paper, the latest iPhone app, or just in your head. As we discussed in Quick tip ‘Slim Mail’ the intimidation of a large inbox can be enough to put a halt in our productivity. Here’s a solution for your ‘to do list’ dilemma’s. Produce a master to do list and store it somewhere it can be checked daily. From this master list, select 3 different jobs and make this your to do list for the day. If you do more, consider it a bonus and choose 3 more the following day!

Quick tip – ‘Slim Mail’

A busy designer or any worker that relies on email, must learn to manage it. It can be quite intimidating looking at at a full inbox, sometimes to the point where you find yourself staring at the screen stressing over what to do.  STOP procrastinating! Begin with the emails that require less work and effort. Start going through the emails that you can resolved quickly rather than spending a whole day over an email that requires more effort. This not only reduces your list, but gets you on a roll and helps reduce the intimidation of the large inbox. Aim to at least have you total inbox and preview window viewable on your screen daily!

I’ll just do the Graphic Design myself!

Not being a Graphic Designer and Designing for your self to keep to budget can be a disaster. With so much support from sites such as YouTube and a Google Search its so easy to find assistance with the various ‘How To’s’ and ‘DIY’s’ associated with Graphic/Web Design. Sure this is useful knowledge, especially with maintaining your website for example, but Graphic Design is more than just coming up with an image to fit a certain space, it’s the process from initial concepts through to target market, the general feel, social acceptance and importantly being original, vibrant and appropriate for the task itself.
